What Rank is that Noble?
In my solo Old School Essentials game (Session 7), the party has come across a noble random encounter for a cliffhanger. I don't have a good way to determine what exactly the noble is, so here's a preliminary table.
The ranks are taken from the AD&D Dungeon Master's Guide and turned into tabular form using Zipf's Law and vibes (for no reason other than I don't want to calculate the number of counts per duke in the Middle Ages). I also combined the ranks of duke and margrave in the table, because from my extremely basic research it seems like marches are just duchies in borderlands. Good enough for me.
| d100 | Title |
|---|---|
| 1-35 | Knight |
| 36-60 | Baronet |
| 61-75 | Baron |
| 76-85 | Viscount |
| 86-90 | Count/Earl |
| 91-94 | Prince |
| 95-97 | Duke or Margrave |
| 98-99 | King |
| 100 | Emperor |
So my party has come across... 46... A baronet or baronetess, a hereditary knight. I'm not sure if that's disappointing or relieving!
