Events (Depthcrawl24)

A list of events, hewing fairly closely to the lists from Emmy Allen's the Gardens of Ynn and the Stygian Library, remixed for my desert depthcrawl, Xeric Sands.

  1. A critter, merely curious.
  2. A critter, hostile or at least unfriendly.
  3. A critter, disturbed while eating.
  4. A critter; trapped, caged, or otherwise entangled.
  5. A critter, surprised while returning home.
  6. A critter, provoked into defending its territory or lair.
  7. A critter; injured, lost, or otherwise disadvantaged.
  8. Two critters in an argument, stand-off, or fight. Roll twice for encounters.
  9. The spoor of some creature is found, be it tracks, scent, litter, etc. Roll an encounter to see who or what left it. The next encounter in this area will be with that creature.
  10. A radical shift in the weather, pick one or roll d6: 1, extreme heat wave; 2, muggy electrostatic air; 3, fierce sandstorm; 4, thick fog; 5, flash flood; 6, sudden freeze.
  11. The terrain has become unrecognizable to you. The wind has covered your path with sand or the rocks have all blended into one another; either way you are lost.
  12. An ominous howl is carried on the wind, not quite bestial, nor meteorological, nor other-worldly. Next time an event would be rolled, roll twice.
  13. The home of some desert dweller is discovered. Roll an encounter to determine what or who lives here and a treasure for a prized possession (include a humanoid skeleton, if a non-sapient critter). Next time you roll an encounter here, the inhabitant returns.
  14. A metal box is buried near to the desert surface. Walking over it makes a clanking noise, but it might not be noticed in a hurry. Roll treasure for contents.
  15. Appearing at first as part of the landscape, a chest or other sturdy container is found. Roll treasure for contents.
  16. A well-traveled shortcut is found, after the fact. It leads to a previously explored location, preferably less deep.
  17. A mysterious path lined with rocks, dolmens, cairns, and the like, leads to a new area d6+1 layers deeper.
  18. An entrance to a subterranean water way is discovered, leading to a previously explored location, preferably rocky and quite deep in the desert.
  19. An exotic river flows far into the desert, leading to a new location, 2d6 levels deeper.
  20. The path back becomes covered in sand or otherwise indistinguishable. Erase one exit from this location.
